Ellis Gym and Pool

Wall Climbing Class

A two hour introductory lesson on the climbing wall at the Ellis Middle School will be offered on Saturday mornings. These sessions are designed to teach the novice the basics of indoor climbing. As well as how to use a harness, the knots needed, how to belay and climbing tips.

They will meet from 9:30-11:30 am on the Stage Gym. Cost is $15 per session. Class size is very limited. Open to ages 12 and up.

Indoor Soccer

We will offer indoor soccer for ages 4-13. They will meet in the Ellis Middle School Gym on the following Saturday mornings: February 14, 21, 28, March 21, 28, April 18, and 25. Cost is $10. Class size is very limited. Four teams for each group will be formed.

Youth Volleyball

For the younger players we have lower nets and lighter balls. Skilled instructors are here to help you with your volleyball skills. We will meet in the Auxiliary Gym at Ellis on the following Saturday mornings: February 14, 21, 28, March 21, 28, April 18, and 25.

Cost is $10. There is a limit of 16 per group.

Ages 7 & 8 9:45 - 10:25 a.m.

Ages 9 & 10 10:30 - 11:10 a.m.

Ages 11 & 12 11:15 - 11:55 a.m.

 

Rec Center

The Rec Center is located at the Ellis Middle School. We are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. The pool and gyms are open for activities such as basketball, swimming, volleyball, etc. Children 18 and under are admitted free, all others are charged $2. Children under 8 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. The climbing wall will be open on Sundays. A limited number of climbers will be taken each hour. Instruction will begin on the hour. Cost for the climbing wall is $2 per hour. Batting cages on the Stage Gym will be open Saturdays in January and February.

Swimming Lesson Refresher

Beginning Saturday, February 28 we will offer a swimming refresher course to help you brush up on your strokes before summer. We will be using the Learn to Swim Program that has been developed by the National Safety Council and Ellis and Associates. The Learn to Swim Program is an innovative approach for enabling individuals of all ages to learn swimming and water safety skills. Classes are held in the Ellis Middle School Pool, 1700 4 Avenue SE. Classes will meet on the following Saturday mornings: February 28 March 21, 28, April 18, 25. Cost for the session is $5. Books are available for each Journey level, cost is $5. Water exploration books are $2.50.

Registration for swimming must be done in person. Most classes have a maximum of six students per class. Register early, the number of classes offered and the class sizes are limited. Classes meet for 30 minutes.

EVERY child must be 48" tall or have an adult present in the water

Swimming Class Descriptions

WATER EXPLORATION SERIES

The parent/caregiver is taught how to prevent and manage an aquatic emergency (including CPR instruction). Developmentally appropriate water activities are introduced so that the adult may safely enjoy the water with their child. The first day of lessons is Parent Orientation (it is encouraged that only parents/guardians attend the first day).

Infant/Toddler Water Exploration for 6 months - 3 years - Offered in the summer at the Municipal Pool.

Preschool Water Exploration Series for 3-4 years - Parent/Guardians are in the water with the child.

JOURNEY SERIES

A fun, interactive program that utilizes colorful take-home books. These provide a unique resource for instructors that allow rapid learning to take place, as will as providing a tool to integrate the parent into the child's learning process.

Journey 1 ages 4-5 and 6-7 (Equal to Red Cross Level 1) - Beginning swimmers will learn basic water skills (adjustment to water, floating, and basic stroke).

Journey 2 ages 5-7 (Equal to Red Cross Levels 2 or 3) - Begin stroke development. Will learn the front crawl, back crawl, and breast stroke.

Journey 3 ages 5-7  Must successfully complete Journey 2 to progress to Journey 3. Will learn elementary backstroke, butterfly, and sidestroke.

STROKE & SAFETY ages 8 and up (Equal to Red Cross Levels 1, 2, 3)  Designed for older youth with little or no swimming experience. Will learn six strokes and water safety. Most kids will need to repeat this course.

CHALLENGE SERIES

Challenge 1 ages 8 and up (Equal to Red Cross Level 4)   Knowledge of six strokes and can do them at the novice level - which means that the person has knowledge of the six strokes and can swim each stroke 1/2 the length of the pool. No breathing pattern has been established in novice level.

Challenge 2 ages 8 and up (Equal to Red Cross Level 5)
Can swim all six strokes at the advanced level - which means that the person can swim each stroke the length of the pool, a breathing pattern as been established
.

Challenge 3 ages 8 and up (Equal to Red Cross Levels 6 & 7) can swim all six strokes at the expert level - which means that a person can swim each stroke a full lap or more and breathing pattern is established and continuous.
