Facts about the Paramount Restoration

Q: How will the restored theatre be used?

A: It will be a versatile Performing Arts and Film Center for use by the entire community. It will be home to Matchbox Children’s Theatre, Summerset Theatre, story telling, concerts, frequent film festivals, city and business events, recitals, pageants and much more.

Q: How will this project be paid for?

A: Money comes from various sources: grants, fund raising concerts and events, charitable gambling, individual, club and business/corporate gifts. In-kind contributions of goods and services are also very important. Note that individual donations greatly increase our chances of receiving large grants because they show that this project has grass roots support.

Q: How much will it cost?

A: The estimate for the amount needed to complete the restoration is two million dollars. This includes new heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical systems, interior painting, theatrical equipment, film projection system, reproduction of the original marquee, exterior masonry repair, east corridor addition and space for dressing rooms and scene shop. An updated Business Plan is available upon request.

Q: What has been accomplished so far?

A: We began by hiring a consultant and conducting a feasibility study. Results were positive. We joined the League of Historic American Theatre and hired an architect with expertise in historic preservation to insure staying within guidelines of the National Register of Historic Places. We have received several grants and AACA owns the building free and clear. A historic structures report, building survey, well-capping, and more, have all been completed. Work on new roof began in fall 1996 and was completed spring 1997. An artist has uncovered original lobby artwork under layers of paint and we received a grant for restoration painting. So far, over $150,000 has been invested into this project.

Q: What is the AACA?

A: Austin Area Commission for the Arts is the independent, 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, which owns the Paramount Theatre. Our main goal is to restore and operate the historic Paramount Theatre. As the officially designated arts commission for the city of Austin, we coordinate a master arts calendar free of charge and offer grant resource materials. Office phone: 507-434-0934.
