GENERAL INFORMATION

In most cases, tickets for Austin area arts events are available at Nemitz's, 407 N Main St. (507) 433-3918. Some tickets are available at the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau which is located at 329 N Main St. Call the CVB at (507)437-4563 to find out more about tickets and events.

Please note that the Austin Daily Herald publishes a helpful community calendar which features a wide variety of events including church and club events and celebrations in addition to arts related activities.

The Chamber calendar is given to current and prospective businesses, Austin business and residential newcomers, and visitors. Phone the Chamber at (507)437-4561 or send email for calendar inquiries and submissions. A regional arts calendar is compiled by Peoples Publishing. Some dates or times three or more months from now are subject to change.

Please provide event & season information as soon as possible. The goal is to have a calendar which lists events up to a year in advance in order to provide a better planning tool. There is no charge to list an event on these calendars.

Many performances are held at Austin High School's Knowlton auditorium,which is located at 300 NW 4th Street (exit south from I-90 at 4th Street NW ).

ARTS ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTIONS

Austin Area Art Center presents monthly exhibits featuring local and area artists and art appreciation programs as well as monthly gallery trips to area art centers.  Member artists exhibit in the sales gallery and also show their work in other community locations.  In addition, there are special exhibits of photography, a January Fiber Show and a holiday member craft show. The Austin Area Art Center is located in the OakPark Mall.( exit north of I-90 on either 4th Street NW or 14th Street NW)

The Austin Area Commission for the Arts manages the Historic Paramount Theatre, which is one of 4 "atmospheric" theaters remaining in Minnesota. The Historic Paramount Theatre is at 125 4th Avenue NE in downtown Austin. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The interior decor transports the patron to a Spanish courtyard under twinkling stars. The Theatre is in the process of being renovated by the AACA. The painting of the theatre public area is nearing completion. Much "behind the scenes" work remains to be done. Tours can be arranged by calling the Historic Paramount Theatre at (507)434-0934 or the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau at (507)437-4563. Volunteers are needed to do cleaning, general repairs, painting, plumbing, box office etc.

Austin Area Men's Gospel Choir performs at various events through the southeastern Minnesota area. The goal of the group is to bring men from various churches together to praise the name of Jesus.

Austin Community Band performs through the summer at the bandshell park. Membership is open to instrumentalists through the Austin area.

Austin Swing Band performs swing music at various engagements around southeastern Minnesota, including the Spamtown USA festival on Independence Day.

Austin Symphony Chorus boasts some of the area's finest vocalists. The chorus sings with the symphony orchestra during its season.

Austin Symphony Orchestra performs at Knowlton Auditorium in Austin High School. The orchestra combines the talents of nearly 70 musicians from throughout the region. Four concerts are held September through April and often feature guest performers Season tickets are available. Students are free when accompanied by an adult.

Circle of Friends Storytellers promotes the art of storytelling. The group performs at the Historic Paramount Theatre each Halloween and each autumn at the J.C. Hormel Nature Center's Pioneer Day which is held the 3rd Sunday of September.

Ecumenical Bells handbell choir performs at various events, including Austin's "Christmas in the City" on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It is comprised of players from the southeastern Minnesota area.

Matchbox Children's Theatre rents costumes to groups & individuals. Matchbox Children's Theatre productions are performed at the Historic Paramount Theatre. The office is above Nemitz's at 407 1/2 N Main Street in downtown Austin. Regular hours: Tuesday and Thursday 4 to 6 p.m. or by arrangement. Millpond Journal is an anthology of writings by local artists.

Northwestern Singers, a performance choir, presents two scheduled shows in Austin each year plus makes various appearances on request.

Riverland Community College Theatre is at the southeast edge of the campus (exit south from I-90 at 14th Street NW ). The college performs three productions through the school year. Auditions are open to the public.

Stories from the Heartland Storytellers Festival is held the last weekend of February at the Historic Paramount Theatre in Austin and at the Albert Lea Day's Inn.

Summerset Theatre performs three theatrical productions each summer, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. It is based at Riverland Community College Theatre.

The Albert Lea Community Theatre and the Minnesota Festival Theatre ( a summer theatre company) both perform at 147 No. Broadway, downtown, just south of the lake (exit Bridge Street south from I-90 or Main Street west from I-35).

Owatonna:
The Owatonna Art Center is at 435 Dunnell Drive (exit Bridge Street east from I-35, then north on State Avenue, turn left into the former campus of the State School).
LittleTheatre is at 560-A Dunnell Drive, just west of the Art Center.
